The skyscrapers swayed
smoothly,
Straining dejectedly
Upward.
Beneath them cathedrals
Frowned.
It was January in the city.
Deserted.
The wind howled in the head,
And people wrapped themselves
Picturesquely
In their own affairs.
In a shop window amber
Burned like flame
And handed out warmth,
So as again
For the umpteenth time
in the night desperately
to burn to ash.
And the rain messed up
everyone's cards and
Blurred the borders:
Though it was January,
In the park
birds were singing!
And in a dark
Lane in Riga
Snowdrops
With white flowers
Were laying out new
intrigues
About a coming
New time.
